Teams Needed to Work with Gypsies in Brazil

Jim and Charlotte Whitley are IMB missionaries working among the Rroma and Calon people groups in Brazil. They were appointed in 1998 and in early 1999 they arrived in Bucharest, Romania to work for the next seven years with the Baptist Roma there and in the surrounding villages. When the opportunity opened up in March of 2007 to begin work in Brazil, they felt God leading them to make the move to Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil.

In addition to the Whilteys, there are now two Brazilian Baptist Home missionaries working with the Rroma and Calon peoples. The Whitleys are praying that God will call out more missionaries, pastors and leaders to help take the Gospel message to this unusual people group. They are also praying that God will call out Rroma and Calon men to be pastors and leaders that will take God’s Word to their own people.

There are many volunteer opportunities in various parts of Brazil to work with gypsies, or ciganos as they are called in Portuguese.

  • A volunteer team is needed to work in Uberaba, Minas Gerais for the dates of June 7-10, 2010.  This is a joint project with JMN  missionary Igor Shimura and other pastors, leaders and volunteers who work with the Calon Ciganos that make up the Amigos dos Ciganos organization.
  • Other locations include:
    • The city of Curitiba, working with Pr. Igor in the state of Paraná.
    • Goiânia has a very new work and could use a larger team to reach various locations at once, including working with calon who have converted to Islam.
    • Small teams are needed in Eastern Sao Paulo and southwestern Minas Gerais.

If you are interested in any of these opportunities, please contact the KBC Partnership Missions Department.
