Follow-up
After you have helped the person pray to receive Christ, there is a need for immediate follow through. We suggest the following:
1. Express your happiness and joy over this decision. Explain how happy the Lord Jesus must be. Congratulate the new disciple.
2. Ask the new disciple to thank the Lord for saving him/her from his/her sins.
3. Be sure you have the individual’s name, address and phone number.
4. It at all possible, enlist the person in a Sunday School or home Bible study group.
5. Take the person with you to church, and encourage him/her to be baptized and to become a part of the fellowship of believers.
6. Ask the pastor to take a personal interest in the new disciple.
7. When available, share follow-through material. Some witnessing booklets have an additional page following the “prayer” that should be read to the new convert.
If the lost person is not ready to accept Christ, do not “pressure” him/her. Remember, do not bruise the fruit. Leave the door open for someone else to return. Let them know that you will pray for them and that you are sure they will make this commitment in the near future.
Leave the booklet with them and ask them to read it at least once or twice within the next two or three days. Explain that no one has to be present for them to be saved. Encourage them to pray before they go to bed and ask Jesus to save them. Explain how they can call you or the church if they need help. Ask permission to have prayer before you leave. Pray for them by name and ask Christ to save them real soon.
Call them up on the phone in two or three days and see how they are doing. Pray for them daily and stay in touch when possible.
