Urgent Needs in Baltimore!

I just received an email from Jaimee La Fave, Director of Mobilization for “Embrace Baltimore” detailing the need for more collegiate summer missionaries. Please pass on the following information to anyone you might know that would be a candidate!

From Jaimee’s Email:

We are still in need of collegiate students to come serve as summer missionaries in Baltimore this year. I thought I would contact you to see if you know of any churches with colligate ministries or another avenue to get the word out about serving in Baltimore.  I’ve listed below information on the summer missionary process through the North American Mission Board.  It is a volunteer position but the students are given an honorarium from NAMB of $75 per week that they receive at the end of their term.

 General Information:

Dates of Service

  • Summer: arrive in Baltimore June 3; return home in August

Ministry Opportunities

  • Summer: opportunities of service available in the local church including youth ministry, children’s ministry, website design and maintenance, promotions for summer events, community survey/canvassing, prayer walking, etc. Or as a part of an Embrace Baltimore traveling team (Vacation Bible School and Sport Camps)

Logistics

  • Local place of service will provide housing, food, and local transportation.
  • Also provided are your travel to and from Baltimore, insurance, and an honorarium.

The Application Process

  • We encourage you to begin the application process. The application must be filled out for you to come and serve in Baltimore but just because you complete it does not commit you to coming. Should you feel God leading you elsewhere just let me know and we can easily change or stop the application process.
  • Go to www.answerthecall.net. Click on the Students tab and you will see a blue box in the middle of the page that says “Student Missionary Application”. You will be applying as a College Summer Student. You will first complete a short form asking for your name, address, phone number, and email. Once you submit that form you will receive an email with further instructions. This email typically arrives in a few minutes so if you have not received it in a few days then please either try again or let me know. Once you begin filling out the application you will be asked to provide the dates you are available as well as your Preference of Service, which would be Embrace Baltimore. Please note that the application must be done in Internet Explorer.
  • If you are not a member of a Southern Baptist church, please also send me an email letting me know that you have begun the application process.

 Specific Job Descriptions

Project #                    Church                               # and Gender

MD13SR09                New Christian Bible Baptist                          1 Male, 1 Female

New Christian Bible Baptist Church is located in Baltimore City, a mostly African American area with a large Jewish population in the north side several blocks from the church. The purpose of the summer camp students’ ministry is to lead in programs for our summer camp, VBS Block Party, and Upward Sports Camp, helping boys and girls ages 5-12 to come to know the Lord Jesus Christ through various children activities of mentoring programs. The students will build relationships with the parents and guardians of those children. They will help with organizing events, sharing Christ, and doing discipleship classes. Some other activities sponsored by New Christian may be asked of them to perform. Our pastor and staff will monitor the students and create a healthy family environment that will help the students grow closer to the Lord and gain a greater sense of mission and serving in the kingdom of the Lord. They will also have the benefit of resources and a support team from our Embrace Baltimore office, pastor, and staff.

MD14SR09                First Baptist Church Lansdowne                 2 Students

First Baptist Church Lansdowne (FBCL) is an established (1944) – growing – changing – revitalized – “Faith Family”. We are currently in transition both in worship style (blending contemporary with traditional elements) and outreach/evangelism ministries – taking seriously our need to reach the lost – outside the “four walls” of the Church! And God is moving – assembling HIS resources and HIS people to do HIS work here as never before! The summer missionaries will have several opportunities to assist our church in real and exciting ways. One way they will be involved is developing small groups and helping to develop leaders for those small groups. Our church is growing in amazing ways, and we need to disciple these people and continue to help them grow. This will also include helping find new and innovative things we can do with our Sunday School classes. Also, our church is planning some awesome outreach activities this summer) including Backyard Bible Clubs, Vacation Bible School, and Upward Sports Camp – just to name a few), and the summer missionaries will be instrumental in making sure things go as planned.

MD16SR09                Northside Baptist Church                                    2 Male, 1 Female

Northside Baptist Church is located in the Glen Oaks section of Baltimore City, Maryland.  This church is participating in the city’s Youth Development Program called “Youth Works,” a program that provides city youth jobs for the summer.  The church will be a host site for jobs and use the occasion to provide students with the opportunity to have a personal relationship with Jesus.  We are in need of students to serve as supervisory staff (oversight of 25-30 students) where you will mentor the students in their own personal growth.   You will also assist in helping to provide other programs for the youth and their parents such as tutoring in various subjects, journaling, career development, college presentations, etc.
