Good Mornin’ PANAMA!

After a four hour flight out of Atlanta, a sea of lights appeared below as we approached Panama City, Panama. Exiting the skybridge into the airport terminal, it was kind of eerie to see the airport, immigration, and customs officials donning their masks to protect themselves from a possible encounter with Swine Flu. It made you wonder why you weren’t wearing one yourself. I took shallow breaths until my wife, Joyce, informed me that wouldn’t help.

We were greeted at the main airport lobby by Kenny and Cheryl Morris, the IMB missionaries here, and transported to our respective places for the night. After a good night’s rest we are all gathered at the Morris’ house for breakfast. Around the table, the Tates Creek vision team and the missionaries are already talking calendar, strategy, opportunities, and logistics!

It’s a beautiful day, and we are getting ready to begin our first day of the vision tour. First, however, the Morris’ are sharing their vision for the work here in Panama and some of the main strategies they see as being effective for reaching the Panamanians for Christ. They also shared some of the history of Baptist work here. It’s interesting to note that until the 70′s, the Home Mission Board, and not the Foreign Mission Board carried out the work here, all in English. Since the withdrawl of US troops and the turning over the control of the canal to Panama, English is not as prevelant here as it once was.

Cheryl gave us some basic orientation for our time here and a preview of our schedule for today. We will be headed for the cities of Colon,Escobal, and El Platano. We’ll see the Gatun Locks from the Caribbean side of the Panama Canal. Can’t wait!
